Video of Open Burning at Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant

Photography by Independent/Gerik Parmele

In 2002, three-quarter-mile-long Load Line 1 was set ablaze at Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant, filling the prairie sky with thick black smoke. A total of 4 load lines have been targeted for open burning.  The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality did not require environmental quality monitoring so no data on emissions impacts is available to the public. The nearby community of Grand Island is located on the Platte River and is home to more than 40,000 people.  Altogether, the community has 14 public elementary schools, three public middle schools, and two public high schools.  Nearby natural areas include Crane Meadows Nature Center and Mormon Island State Recreation Area.
